Look, when you're new to pickleball, it's all very exciting. The paddles, the gear, the promise of becoming the next big thing in your local league. But here's the truth: you don't need much to start. A basic Vatic Pro Prism Flash for $85 or a $25 set from Five Below will do just fine for your trial run.

You know what's more important than your paddle? Court shoes. Don't even think about wearing those old running shoes. Your knees are more fragile than your ego after a bad game, so do yourself a favor and invest in proper shoes early.

I posted about this on Instagram — go watch it — and the comments were a revelation. Turns out I'm not the only one who thinks a generic backpack and a good pair of sunglasses are all you really need to start your pickleball career.
